Good evening everyone, this is Josh Horton at PNC Field filling in for Mike Vander Woude. Tonight’s contest is the first of a four game homestand with the Bull’s, game time is scheduled for 7:05.

Game Notes:

  • Heath Phillips is back at PNC Field, but this time as a member of the Durham Bulls. Phillips was released by the Yankees and signed a minor league contract with the Tampa Bay Rays. He tossed 2.0 scoreless innings with 5 strikeouts against the Yankees in the ’08 Governors Cup Finals. The Yankees won the game 1-0.
  • Colin Curtis was activated today. Curtis hasn’t played since spraining his ankle on April 28th against the Louisville Bats. Before going on the disabled list he was as hot as any player in the International League. Curtis will look to continue a seven game hitting streak tonight against the Bulls.
Blog 2.jpgA rare site here at the ballpark, the Durham Bulls are actually taking infield/outfield. First team I have seen take infield/outfield all year.

Bottom of the 4th, 1-0 Yankees

David Winfree just doubled in Winfree to give the yankees a 1-0 lead. Jon Weber flew out to left field and Jesus Montero is now at the plate with one out in the bottom half of the 4th inning.

Top of the 5th, Tied 1-1
J.J. Fermaniak scored from second on a single to centerfield by Fernando Perez. The score is now knotted at 1-1 and Rashad Eldridge is at the plate with two outs in the top half of the fifth.
Bottom of the 5th, 4-1 Bulls
Kelly Shoppach singled in Fernando Perez and Rashad Eldridge to extend the Bull’s lead to 3-1. Dan Johnson singled in Elliot Johnson to make it a 4-1 ball game.
Bottom of the 6th, 7-1 Bulls
Chris Richard scored on a double play off the bat of Fernando Perez to extend the Bulls lead to 5-1. Elliot Johnson singled in Desmond Jennings and Jose Lobaton singled in Rashad Elldridge to give the Bulls a 7-1 lead.
Bottom of the 7th, 8-1 Bulls

(Stephen Strasburg vs. Rene Rivera in last night’s 3-2 victory over the Chiefs)

Good afternoon everyone, this is Josh Horton filling in for Mike Vander Woude from Alliance Bank Stadium in Syracuse, New York. The Yankees and Chiefs will face off for fifth straight game today at 5:05.

Game Notes:

  • Jonathan Albaladejo extended his save streak to 20 games last night (dating back to last season). Albaladejo is a perfect 16-16 during save situations this season.
  • Zack Segovia is the only pitcher in the International League who was the winning pitcher in games that were started by Stephen Strasburg and Aroldis Chapman.
  • Rene Rivera’s home run was the first homer allowed by Stephen Strasburg.
  • Tonight’s Taco Bell K-Man is David Winfree. Before being tossed last night, Jon Weber was 1-1 with a single and a walk. Therefore, no one recieved free tacos. Winfree will look to continue to disappoint the Chief’s faithful.
Bottom of the 2nd, 1-0 Yankees
Jon Weber scored on a sacrifice fly to deep center field by Jesus Montero. The Yankees stranded Reid Gorecki on first and Chad Huffman on third. Chris Duncan, Chase Lambin and Devin Ivany are due up for the Chiefs in the bottom half of the second inning.
Bottom of the 3rd, 4-0 Yankees
Eduardo Nunez and Reegie Corona scored on a triple to right field by Chad Huffman to extend the Yankee lead to 3-0. Just one at bat later, Huffman scored thanks to an RBI double by David Winfree. Jesus Montero struck out swinging to end the top half of the 3rd. Jamie Burke, Eric Bruntlett and Pedro Lopez are due up for the Chiefs in the bottom of the third.
Bottom of the 3rd, 4-0 Yankees
The official scorer here in Syracuse has just announced that the three RBI – triple hit by Chad Huffman is now an error. This scoring change means that all three runs the Yankees scored in the third are unearned. Also, Pedro Lopez stole second then advanced to third on a throwing error by Montero. Pete Orr flew out to left and Lopez was stranded at third. Reid Gorecki, Jeff Natale and Greg Golson are due up for the Yankees in the top half of the fourth inning.
Top of the 5th, 4-1 Yankees
The Chiefs are on the board. Luis Ordaz scored from third on a ground out to first by Chris Duncan. Ron Villone has come in to relieve Matt Chico. Reegie Corona, Eduardo Nunez and Jon Weber are due up for the Yankees in the fifth.
Top of the 5th, 4-1 Yankees
Scary moment here at Alliance Bank Park. Ron Villone just hit Eduardo Nunez in either the knee or the ankle. It is hard to tell exactly where the ball struck Nunez, but he was down for a few minutes. Nunez got up and was helped off the field by Darren London and Dave Miley. Matt Cusick pinch ran for Nunez and is now playing third base. Reegie Corona is now playing shortstop. Jamie Burke, Eric Bruntlett and Pedro Lopez are due up for the Chiefs in the bottom of the fifth.
Bottom of the 6th, 4-3 Yankees
Chase Lambin hit an RBI double to right to cut the Yankees lead to just 4-2. Chris Duncan scored on the play. Lambin stole third and then scored on a triple to right-center field by Devin Ivany. Mark Melancon has come in to relieve Romulo Sanchez. Melancon will face Eric Bruntlett with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Bottom of the sixth, 5-4 Chiefs
Melancon just walked Pete Orr on five pitches and Jamie Burke scored from third to give the Chiefs a 5-4 lead. Melancon is still in a big jam.
Bottom of the sixth, 5-4 Chiefs
Inning over. Josh Whitesell grounded out to Matt Cusick. Cusick had to dive to the third base bag to get Pedro Lopez. Chiefs manager, Trent Jewett did not like the call and was thrown out by John Conrad. Mike Macdougal is now pitching for the Chiefs.
Bottom of the 7th, 5-4 Chiefs
Mark Melancon has been tossed by home plate umpire Vic Carapazza. Not sure why Melancon was tossed, but he was not a happy guy as he exited the field. Jason Hirsh is now pitching for the Yankees.
Bottom of the 7th, 6-4 Chiefs
Chris Duncan singled in Leonard Davis to extend the Chiefs lead to 6-4. There is nobody out and Duncan is on second. Chase Lambin is at the plate for the Chiefs.
Top of the 8th, 6-4 Chiefs
Jason Begmann is now pitching for the Chiefs. Chad Huffman, David Winfree and Jesus Montero are due up for the Yankees in the top half of the eighth inning.
Final score, 6-4 Chiefs

Final day in Louisville and a visit to the city would not be complete without a trip to the Louisville Slugger Factory and Museum.  If you have not been here you really need to go.  One of the many cool things at the musuem prior to going on the tour is the wall as you first enter the lobby.  It has the signature on a “wall of fame” of every player under contract with Louisville Slugger.  Two of the members of the current SWB field staff happen to be on that wall and the above pictures are of their name plates as they would have appeared on the bats they used back in the day.  Not bad company to share a display wall with the likes of Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Mickey Mantle, Harmon Kilebrew, George Brett and others.  A must see…..Really.

On to other things baseball related for the Yankees….

Curtis Granderson is in the line up and will hit second and play in centerfield for seven innings tonight before being replaced.  He will most likely appear with SWB in the first game of the DH on Thursday.  But I let him tell you all about the rest of his rehab when he joins me on tonight’s pregame show on  “The Game Sports Radio Network.” How about that for a plug!  The show starts at 6:35 PM and can be heard on 1280 AM, 1340 AM, 1440 AM and 1590 AM in NEPA.  If you’re not in the area you can listen at www.swbyankees.com or at www.minorleaguebaseball.com

RHP Ivan Nova getting the start for the Yankees tonight and should improve upon his last outing which was his shortest of the season at 2.1 innings.  True he was hit in the foot with a line drive but also remember he had gone 17 days inbetween starts and while with the Major League club only threw 3.0 innings in actual games.  So there was a certain amount of rust he needed to shake loose.

David Winfree who has been hampered by a sore left wrist is doing ok and took ground balls at first base during BP this afternoon and should hopefully be back in the lineup soon.

The probables for the upcoming five games in four days with Syracuse look like this….

Thursday @ SWB

G1 SYR – RHP Jeff Mandel (1-0, 1.46) vs. SWB – RHP Zach McAllister (2-2, 4.33)

G2 SYR – RHP Shairon Martis (2-2, 5.10) vs SWB – LHP Kei Igawa (2-0, 5.09)

Friday @ SWB

SYR – RHP J.D. Martin (2-1, 2.97) vs. SWB – RHP Dustin Moseley (1-2, 4.72)

Saturday @ SYR

SWB – RHP Jason Hirsh (4-5, 3.09) @ SYR – RHP Stephen Strasburg (3-0, 0.39)

Sunday @ SYR

SWB – RHP Romulo Sanchez (2-2, 4.36) @ SYR – LHP Matt Chico (1-0, 6.00)

If you want to see Strasburg in what everyone says will be the final game of his minor league career (at least for now).  Good luck!  The ‘Cuse is a pretty easy drive up 81 although I doubt there are a whole lot of tickets left.

BOT 1st 0-0

Nice peg by Jesus Montero in the bottom of the first inning after Chris Burke drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch by SWB starter Ivan Nova.  Burke was off and running on the first pitch and Montero threw a seed to second base and Burke slid righit into the tag of Reegie Corona.  Great play considering the Bats had stolen 18 bases in 20 attempts during the season series in 2010.

BOT 3rd 0-0

Another great throw by Montero cutting down Michael Griffin trying to steal second base following a lead off walk.  Curtis Granderson showing the groin is ok by going deep to center field and making a nice running catch off the bat of Todd Frazier.

BOT 6th LOU 2 – SWB 0

Todd Frazier continues his torrid hitting against the Yankees this season as he begin the game with a .429 average the Yankees this season with 2 HR and 4 RBI’s.  Frazier hammered a Nova pitch over stands in left and onto the concourse for a solo homer. His sixth homer of the season and third in three days against SWB.  Two batters later Zack Cozart snuck one over the wall in left center for his sixth of the year and the second solo HR of the inning gave the Bats the 2-0 advantage.

BOT 7th LOU 3 – SWB 0

Ivan Nova is done for the night. The Yankees right hander threw 81 pitches over his 6.0 innings of work.  He allowed 2R both earned 4H (two homers) with 3K’s and 2BB.  Zack Segovia is on the mound for the Yankees in releif of Nova.  Segovia got the first two hitters with no problem on a ground out and a strikeout.  Witih two down Segovia lost Castillo on a 3-2 pitch for ball four and the two out walk extended the inning.  Michael Griffin nearly went yard to left hitting the top of the fence and staying in the yard for a run producing double to make the Bats lead 3-0.

The Yankees picked up one in the top of the ninth inning off Jesus Delgado on an RBI double by Eduardo Nunez that scored Greg Golson, who led the inning off with a double.  With one down and Nunez at second base, Jesus Montero, facing Logan Ondrusek, lined into a game ending double play.  Montero lined sharply to Zack Cozart at shortstop who threw to second to double off Nunez who had strayed too far off the bag.

Game 44 SWB Yankees @ Louisville (5/24/10)

Louisville Slugger Field.JPG

Louisville Slugger Field, another of the IL’s great yards, opened in 2000.

Curtis Granderson is in the Yankees lineup again this morning and will be the DH and is expected to play the entire game.  The plan is for him to get the start in centerfield on Tuesday night and play seven innings.

David Winfree is not in the lineup again this morning/afternoon.  He has a sore left wrist, nothing real serious, he has gotten treatment on it and is still a day to day proposition.

Ivan Nova is still slated to get the start here tomorrow nigth despite getting drilled in the foot by a Perdo Alvarez line drive in his last start on Thursday.  X-Ray’s were negative and he is walking around limp.

The Yankees snapped a 37.2 inning scoreless streak at Louisville Field with a third inning run in Sunday’s 5-1 loss to the Bats.  The last run scored by SWB in this ballpark was on May 9, 2009 when the Yankees picked up a pair of runs in the top of the third inning.  SWB went the remainder of the second game of the series in ’09 (6.0 innings), lost game three 3-0 in 11 innings (17.0) and were shutout in game four as well (26.0 innings).  Opening this season, Sam LeCure tossed a one hit shutout on Saturday (35.0 innings) and it took until two outs in the third inning against Travis Wood to finally score.

BOT 1st / Bats 1 – SWB 0

Louisville got the first run of the game home for the third straight game scoring in the bottom of the first inning on a throwing error by catcher Jesus Montero. With runners on the corners following back-to-back singles to open the game and a stolen base by leadoff man Chris Burke, the Bats had runners on the cormers.  With one down in the inning Zack Cozart took off to steal second base. When Montero’s throw went into centerfield, Burke scored from third and Louisville led 1-0.  For the 2010 season the Bats have stolen 17 bases against the Yankees in 19 attempts.

THe Yankees picked up their first lead at Louisville Slugger Field since May 9th of 2009 (a span of 380 days) picking up two runs in the top of the second off Ben Jukich. With one down in the inning and Reid Gorecki at third base following a walk and a double by Reegie Corona, Jeff Natale picked up his first RBI as a Yankee with a SAC fly to left scoring Gorecki to tie the game at 1-1.  With two down and Corona still at second base Greg Goleson delivered an RBI single to make it 2-1.

Heading to the top of the fifth inning and Ben Jukich is done for the Bats.  Right hander Federico Baez takes over for Jukich who went 4.0 IP and allowed 2R, 2ER on 5H with 3K and 2BB.  The best that Jukich can do is a no decision.

A long fly ball to left center off the bat of Jon Weber turned into an adventure for Yonder Alonso for the Bats, a first baseman by trade, took perhaps as bad a path to a fly ball as I have ever seen but still made the catch. I will say this as a left fielder he makes a fine first baseman.

BOT 5th / SWB 2 - Bats 2

The Bats picked up the equalizer in the bottom of the fifth inning with two outs on a squeeze bunt by Drew Sutton that scored Chris Burke to knot the game at 2-2.  Burke reached on a lead off walk and moved to second base on the Bats 20th stolen base off the Yankees this season in seven games. Burke moved ot third base on Yonder Alonso’s grounder to second with one down and scored on Sutton’s perfect bunt up the line at third.  Corona made a great effort but Sutton just out ran the baseball.

BOT 6th / Bats 3 – SWB 2

The Bats took the lead with another single run coming in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out Michael Griffin  doubled to left and went to third on a single to left by Wilken Castillo.  Romulo Sanchez was taken out in favor of Mark Melancon who allowed a single to the first batter he faced, Todd Frazier.  The RBI hit scoring Griffin gave the Bats a 3-2 lead.  Sanchez finished the day with 5.1 IP 7H, 3R, 2ER, 5K, 3BB.

TOP 8th / SWB 6 – LOU 3

The Yankees knocked around Logan Ondrusek in the top of the eighth picking up four runs on four hits to take a 6-3 advantage.  The first four hitters of the inning all reached base with Jon Weber leading off the inning with a double, a single by Chad Huffman moved Weber to third and extended his hit streak to match his season high at six. Reid Gorecki singled to left scring Weber and tying the game at 3-3.  Reegie Corona drew a walk to load the bases.  Pinch hitter Rene Rivera got the second run home in the inning on a grounder to third.  After  strikeout, Curtis Granderson knocked home a pair with a two out 2RBI single to center giving the Yankees a 6-3 lead.

Jonathan Albaladejo in to try and close out the Bats in the bottom of the ninth inning going for his 14th save in as many opportunities.  Mark Melancon pitched 2.2 innings allowing 5H, with 2K’s and 1 BB.

Albaladejo made it a little interesting in the ninth with a lead off walk and a one out error by Matt Cusick at third.  Albaladejo faced the tying run in consecutive at bats but struck out Michael Griffin looking and Wilkin Castillo swinging to end the game.

BOT – 1ST  Louisville 2 – SWB 0

The Bats picked up a pair off Yankees starter Jason Hrish in the first inning on what appeared to be a couple of home friendly calls.  Chris Burke led off the inning with an infield single that certainly seemed (and tv replay confirmed it) that he was out at first base on a nice play by third baseman Reegie Corona.  The Bats Zack Cozart followed with a single to left getting Burke to third.  During the AB to Yonder Alonso, Cozart stole second base although he appeared to be out on a nice throw by Rene Rivera, the new Yankee catcher.  Alonso delivered the first run of the stadium with an RBI single to left for a 1-0 lead.  Drew Sutton followed with a SAC fly and the Bats led 2-0.

BOT 2nd Louisville 3 – SWB 0

Todd Frazier hit a 412 foot homer to left off Hirsh, who has allowed six this season.  It was a no doubter by Frazier who had been in a slump that had driven his average down to .190.

TOP 3rd Louisville 3 – SWB 1

The Yankees got on the board in the top of the third inning off Bats starter Travis Wood with a two out rally.  Jeff Natale drew a one out walk from Wood and went first to third on Curtis Granderson’s single.  With two out and runners on the corners, Eduardo Nunez singled to right field scoring Natale for a 3-1 Bats lead.

BOT 4th Louisville 5 – SWB 1

Two more solo homers hit off Hirsh a lead off shot to right by Wilken Castillo and then a second solo homer to left by Frazier who came into this series yesterday with a .187 average and is now 3-6 with 2 HR and a double.

BOT 6th Louisville 5 – SWB 1

Jason Hirsh is done for the afternoon.  The right hander went 5.0 innings allowed 5R all earned on 8H with 3K and 1BB.  The Bats hit three homers off Hirsh who has allowed a team high eight on the season.

Top 7th Louisville 5 – SWB 1

Travis Wood is gone as well. The Bats starter wasn’t no hit good like LeCure was yesterday but was dominating enough to hold the Yankees to one run on four hits.  The left hander allowed just one run over 6.0 innings and continued the good run of the Bats starters against the Yankees in the series.
